History of the Flag
Formerly known as the St George's Ensign due to the simultaneous existence of a crossless variant, the White Ensign serves as the ensign flown on British Royal Navy vessels and coastal establishments. This emblem features a red St George's Cross against a white background, mirroring the flag of England, but with the addition of the Union Flag in the upper canton.
Notably, the White Ensign is also displayed on yachts owned by members of the Royal Yacht Squadron and on ships from Trinity House that accompany the reigning monarch.
Beyond the United Kingdom, various other nations possess their versions of the White Ensign, incorporating their respective national flags in the canton. In some cases, the St George's Cross is substituted by a naval emblem that excludes the cross element. For instance, yachts affiliated with the Royal Irish Yacht Club exhibit a white ensign with the Irish tricolour in the upper quadrant, accompanied by the crowned harp from the Heraldic Badge of Ireland. Meanwhile, the Flag of the British Antarctic Territory and the Commissioners' flag of the Northern Lighthouse Board position the Union emblem in the first quarter of a white field, omitting the predominant red St George's Cross. However, it's important to note that these variations are not intended for maritime use as ensigns.
