History of the Flag

The emblem of Scotland (referred to as "bratach na h-Alba" in Scottish Gaelic, and as the "Banner of Scotland" or "St. Andrew's Cross" in Scots, also known as the Saltire) is the recognized national flag of Scotland. This flag comprises a white diagonal cross placed over a blue background. In contrast to the Royal Standard of Scotland, the Saltire is the accurate flag for both private individuals and corporate entities to display.

Aiming to embody Scotland's identity, the flag is ideally flown on Scottish Government premises daily, commencing at 8:00 am until sunset, although exceptions apply.

The earliest known usage of this flag dates back to a depiction of a heraldic banner in Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount's Register of Scottish Arms, around the year 1542. This representation potentially draws inspiration from a historical precedent of the late 15th century, involving the utilization of a white diagonal cross situated in the upper left quadrant of a blue flag. This creation is often attributed to Queen Margaret, the spouse of James III (1451–1488).
