History of the Flag

The Royal Banner of the Royal Arms of Scotland, more commonly referred to as the Lion Rampant of Scotland, stands as the emblem of Scotland's royalty. This banner, historically known as the Royal Standard of Scotland, holds the Scottish Gaelic name "Bratach rìoghail na h-Alba" and the Scots title "Ryal banner o Scotland," while also being recognized as the Banner of the King of Scots. It holds a prominent role as the royal standard of Scotland, utilized both by the monarchs of Scotland in times past and by the Kingdom of Scotland itself.

Distinct from the national flag of Scotland, the Saltire, the Royal Banner of Scotland is subject to specific regulations outlined in an Act of the Parliament of Scotland. Its usage is formally restricted to a select few Great Officers of State who officially represent the Monarchy within Scotland. Additionally, it finds official presence at royal residences in Scotland during periods when the reigning Head of State is absent.

The earliest instance of the Lion Rampant, symbolizing the royal emblem, dates back to 1222, during the reign of Alexander II. Further adornment came about during the rule of Alexander III (1249–1286), introducing a dual border embellished with lilies. This distinctive emblem was integrated into the shield of the ancient Kingdom of Scotland's royal coat of arms. It was accompanied by a royal banner exhibiting the same design and held its significance as the emblem for the King of Scots. This remained the case until 1603 when the Union of the Crowns occurred, leading to James VI's ascent to the thrones of England and Ireland, thus altering the course of the monarchy.

Subsequent to 1603, the lion rampant of Scotland became a recurring element in the royal arms and banners of successive Scottish and later British monarchs. This incorporation aimed to symbolize Scotland within the context of the broader United Kingdom, as evident in today's Royal Standard of the United Kingdom. Despite its present-day use being confined to representatives of the Monarch and official royal residences, the Royal Banner remains among the most instantly recognizable symbols of Scotland.
