History of the Flag

The flag representing Surrey consists of blue and gold squares arranged in a checkerboard pattern, derived from the historical county of Surrey's traditional symbols. This design draws its origins from the coat of arms of William de Warenne, the first Earl of Surrey, characterized by a heraldic blazon: Chequy Or and Azur.

Formally recognized as a "traditional design" by the Flag Institute on September 11, 2014, the Surrey flag's registration followed research conducted by Philip Tibbetts on behalf of the Association of British Counties. This investigation highlighted the county's historical association with an ancient emblem. Before this official registration, Surrey lacked an established flag, although the banner of the Surrey County Council's coat of arms was frequently employed in its stead.

The Surrey flag embodies the arms that were initially employed as a personal heraldic emblem by William de Warenne, the inaugural Earl of Surrey, in 1088. Over time, this symbol became closely linked to the county itself, as demonstrated in a 17th-century poem chronicling the Battle of Agincourt.

The historical badge of Surrey Herald of Arms Extraordinary, rooted in heraldry, also echoes this emblem.

An early reference to these arms appears in the 13th-century Glover's Roll of Arms. Here, an account of the siege of Caerlaverock Castle around 1300 describes the deeds of John de Warenne, the 6th Earl of Surrey. This account makes mention of his blue and gold checkered banner, stating that "his banner with gold and azure, was nobly chequered." Although the male line of the de Warenne family ceased in 1347, evidence suggests that the design continued to be utilized by the county's inhabitants. This is corroborated by a poem from 1627 by Michael Drayton, recounting the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, which records that the men of Surrey carried a banner adorned with gold and blue checks into battle as a tribute to their late earl.
