History of the Flag

The flag of Australia, also acknowledged as the Australian Blue Ensign, draws its inspiration from the British Blue Ensign, characterized by a blue field with the Union Jack positioned in the upper hoist quarter. The Australian iteration enhances this framework with distinctive elements, including a prominent white seven-pointed star recognized as the Commonwealth Star, and an arrangement resembling the Southern Cross constellation, composed of five white stars (one smaller five-pointed star and four larger seven-pointed stars). Beyond this iconic flag, Australia boasts an array of official flags that symbolize its populace and vital governmental roles.

The original design of the Australian flag, featuring a six-pointed Commonwealth Star, was chosen in 1901 through a competition held post-Federation. It was first hoisted in Melbourne on September 3, 1901, a date subsequently declared as Australian National Flag Day in 1996. A variant of this design, granted approval by King Edward VII in 1903, was later modified to the present seven-pointed Commonwealth Star version by proclamation on December 8, 1908. The flag's dimensions were officially established in 1934, and in 1954, the Flags Act 1953 solidified its recognition and legal definition as the Australian National Flag. This enduring emblem remains a powerful symbol of the nation's identity and unity.
